Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) is often misunderstood — in part because its symptoms don’t always seem connected to the jaw at all.
Many clients come to me experiencing:
-
Frequent headaches
-
Ongoing ear discomfort (like pressure, pain, or fullness)
-
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
-
Sudden spells of vertigo or dizziness
Yet, they don’t report any obvious jaw pain or clicking. The surprising truth? These symptoms are often signs of referred pain from TMJD.
The Hidden Connection
The temporomandibular joint is closely linked to the muscles, nerves, and structures around the head, neck, and ears. When the jaw is misaligned — or when a person clenches or grinds their teeth (often without realizing it) — it creates tension and imbalance in the surrounding muscles.
This can lead to:
-
Tension headaches
-
Sensations of ear fullness or pressure
-
Ringing or buzzing in the ears
-
Lightheadedness or dizziness
Even without noticeable jaw pain, the underlying stress in these muscle groups can quietly fuel a cascade of frustrating symptoms.
Relief Begins at the Root
At TMJ Relief & Therapy LLC, I specialize in identifying and treating the hidden muscular tension that often lies at the heart of these symptoms. By using targeted, therapeutic techniques to release the connected and supportive muscles, we reduce inflammation, restore alignment, and relieve the strain that’s been silently affecting your quality of life.
Many clients tell me, “I never realized my jaw was the issue — but now everything makes sense.”
If you’ve been chasing relief from unexplained headaches, ear symptoms, or dizziness — your jaw may be the key you didn’t know you were missing.

Laura Clowser
Registered Nurse, TMJ Specialists
Laura Clowser opened TMJ Relief & Therapy LLC as a Registered Nurse of over 18 years. She began her training in TMJD work early 2023 after her 7-year-old daughter had been experiencing occasional ear pains that were being treated over and over with antibiotics even though there was no obvious sign of ear infection other than pain. Eventually after getting multiple 2nd opinions, she came across an ENT who suggested the issue was TMJD. Laura reached out to her good friend Jana Powell in Richmond VA (whom she had heard was a TMJ specialist but never really knew what that meant or what she did) Jana began the treatments and training techniques which had an immediate impact on her daughter's ear pain. During the process Laura also learned that he own headaches and occasional ear sensitivity were in fact TMJD. Making such a meaningful discovery that truly impacted and improved her, and her daughters daily comfort Laura began studying to be a TMJD practitioner. "It's astonishing to me how few people realize they have TMJD simply because the symptoms they experience are not jaw pain and doctors don't routinely think TMJD when patients come to them for headaches or earaches. The majority of my referrals are from Dentists who can see the signs in their client enamel that they are clenching or grinding of their teeth."
